Kurri Food Co-operative – is a membership Co-operative. Kurri Kurri Community Centre Inc. administers/manages the access, storage and distribution of food/household products that have been acquired by the Co-operative.
Membership of the Co-operative is offered to those people in the Cessnock/Kurri Kurri district who are:
in genuine need of support and/or under hardship
able to demonstrate their qualification of membership either by presentation of a current Pension or Health Benefit Card issued by Centrelink
referred to the Kurri Food Co-operative program through recognised organisations in the Cessnock/Kurri Kurri district.
Able to demonstrate that they understand the program, have read or have had the information supplied explained to them and signed the indemnity and membership forms.
Members can access food from the co-operative on a weekly basis. They contribute to the co-operative through purchase of shares that directly cover the handling/storage and distribution of the goods.
Points are allotted to items or groups of items for various reasons, it may be to limit the access of particular items to ensure equal access to variety by all of the co-operative membership, it may be because of particular storage or handling needs etc.
The main vision of the program is to give those who are less fortunate or under hardship an opportunity to relieve their food budget. It is not a replacement or a competitive program but one that can supplement the budget and give the opportunity of extra money in the family budget for other purchases. Members can access available goods with shares they have purchased that cover the handling and access costs on a weekly basis.
Kurri Food Co-operative is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays from 10:00am to 1:30pm
